Grocery Store Donation Program

Five days a week we pick up food donations from over 80 local grocery stores.  The program saves over 4 million pounds of food a year from going to waste in local landfills and instead feeds our region’s most vulnerable residents.

It is estimated that more than 800 million pounds of wholesome food is discarded from grocery stores in the United States each year. The Food Bank of North Alabama partners with local grocery stores to keep these fruits, vegetables, meats and dry goods out of the waste stream so we can feed thousands of families in need in our community.

The Food Bank works closely with grocery stores to teach them how to donate close-to-code food that is no longer shelf-worthy but still wholesome. The Food Bank has a fleet of refrigerated trucks that picks up these food donations five days a week. We then inspect and sort the donations for redistribution.

Each year the Food Bank of North Alabama and our grocery store partners save more than 4 million pounds of food from going to waste in local landfills – instead these wholesome foods feed neighbors at risk of hunger across North Alabama.

Grocers who would like to donate can contact our Store Donation Program coordinator at (256) 947-1027 or donorrelations@fbofna.org to explore a partnership. We will meet with your management team to discuss the value of donating, share best donation practices and help develop a plan that suits your business.
