How We Work

Ever wondered how a food bank works? At the Food Bank of North Alabama, it's a coordinated effort that moves millions of pounds of nutritious food from donors and farms to the neighbors who need it most. We don't hand out food directly; instead, we act as the hub that supplies a network of more than 230 partner pantries, shelters, and children's programs across our 11-county region. Every step is designed to move fresh, healthy food closer to our community with speed, care, and dignity. Here's how the food bank works, from the moment a donation arrives to the day it reaches a family's table.

It starts with generosity. We gather food from grocery retailers, manufacturers, local farmers, food drives, and national partners like Feeding America. Financial gifts stretch even further; every dollar donated helps us procure enough food for more than three and a half meals. Together, these donations form the foundation of everything we do.

Once donations are secured, our trucks and logistics team get to work. We collect, transport, and consolidate food from across the region and beyond, keeping perishable items cold and safe along the way. Moving food efficiently means more of it reaches our neighbors while it's still fresh.

At our Huntsville and Florence facilities, food is sorted, inspected, and stored under proper conditions until it's ready to go. Our warehouse team carefully manages inventory so that nutritious food — especially fresh produce — is distributed quickly and never goes to waste.

We supply food to a network of over 230 local pantries, shelters, and children's programs. These trusted community partners are the front line of hunger relief, welcoming neighbors in the places they already know and trust. By working through partners, we extend our reach into every corner of North Alabama.

The result: more than 184,000 neighbors at risk of hunger are fed each year. But feeding people today is only half of our mission. We also address hunger's root causes through local food initiatives that connect family farms to schools, pantries, and grocery stores building a stronger food system so healthy food is within reach for the long haul.
